1947. The first hungry years after the war: fragments of lost death notices still arrive, the Doctors' Case is fabricated, the fight against rootless cosmopolitanism and a new wave of persecution of the clergy are gaining momentum - in one of the remote villages, a little five-year-old girl is being bullied, called a fascist, because her mother returned from a concentration camp with a child, which means she had him with a German. Avdotya, a mother of many children, tries to take care of the girl, but she herself has seven children to feed.
